An Aberdeen-based contract caterer has announced the three winners of their in-house apprenticeship scheme, Fresh Olives, for 2015.

The new Westhill headquarters of Entiér Ltd – the catering support services company formed in 2008 – played host to the final, where five finalists competed to scoop the coveted places.

CEO Peter Bruce said: ‘With the dramatic demise in traditional apprenticeship programmes, we realised the importance of creating something unique that would be inspirational and achievable for young people in the Grampian region.

‘Fresh Olives provides a wonderful platform for a credible career path in the hospitality industry, and offers three winners a three-year paid apprenticeship with the opportunity of a full-time job within the company thereafter.

‘It’s an exciting time for the latest batch of Fresh Olives to be joining us.’

According to Mr Bruce, the newly enlisted Fresh Olives learn to combine an understanding of good nutrition with creative flair and the ability to produce good food.

The first apprentices – Rebekka Cormack and Danielle Ritchie – graduated the scheme last August and have now secured full-time supervisory positions within the company.

This year’s finalists included: Stevielee Westland and Rachel Wallace, both 15, from Bucksburn Academy; Jade Grunwell, 15, from Bridge of Don Academy; and Iona Greenfield and Lewis Hanratty, both 15, from Hazelhead Academy.

Launched in 2010, Fresh Olives is aimed at fourth year school leavers interested in a career in the hospitality industry. The scheme was recognised for Commitment to People Development at the Northern Star Business Awards 2011, and last year for Innovation in Training at the CIS Excellence Awards.

Following the 60-minute cook-off it was agreed that Stevielee Westland, Rachel Wallace and Jade Grunwell were the competition winners. They will begin their apprenticeship in August.
