Matching Food To Your Mood: Ginger Snap Catering

From humble beginnings in a Perthshire kitchen to new 1,000 sq. ft premises in Edinburgh, Ginger Snap Catering & Food Design has become one of Scotland’s most innovative and fastest-growing catering firms.

Despite varying so widely in concept, duration, size and venue, there’s a simple common denominator in the events business. As entertaining, dynamic and unique as each occasion may be, events such as weddings, dances, dinner parties, family celebrations and – to some extent at least – corporate dos, all share one underlying theme in their DNA: the inclusion of emotion.

From the moment a concept is born to the day or evening an event takes place, emotion is one of the key factors governing the decisions and choices of the host, and it is for this reason that food constitutes such a crucial component of a party planning strategy. It is also why Ginger Snap’s managing director, Tania Dixon, is so adept at identifying the spirit of a given event, and creating menus to suit the mood:

‘I’ve always been interested in the way that parties, weddings and get-togethers rely so heavily on the food served, and how that food can influence the mood of the guests,’ she explains. ‘That was a major reason for launching Ginger Snap; I wanted to create a company that not only does away with the tired old one size fits all motif, but actively promotes imagination, creativity, and variety.

‘If we can offer food that suits the guests and – if required – compliments the theme of the event, then we’ll be one step ahead of other caterers who may merely be giving the client what they think they want.

‘Moreover – if we do it right – organisers can, in theory, come to us for help and ideas for themes.’

And this philosophy has led the company to its own successes; since September 2009, when Ginger Snap picked up Caterer of the Year trophy at the Scottish Event Awards, Tania and her team have been on an upward trajectory that culminated in May when they picked up the Event-Caterer trophy at the CIS Excellence Awards:

‘Winning the CIS award capped off a stellar 12 months for us,’ she explains. ‘We’d picked up some high profile, prestigious venues, and we really found our niche in terms of the type and style of events we cater for. ‘We’ve also brought on some terrific staff who make the clients feel relaxed but also open to ideas and suggestions. It’s a mix that ensures we get a lot of repeat business, while managing to attract new contacts who are looking for something a little bit different.’
