A convenience store in Edinburgh has won the Scottish Grocers’ Sustainable Retailer of the Year award.

The ScotMid Cooperative outlet, in the capital’s Moredun area, features LED lighting, heat recovery from fridges and a building management system.

Scotmid also built a brand-new ‘green classroom’ – a learning space in which the local community and businesses can learn about sustainability.

The store, which relaunched in October last year, underwent a refit with a focus on resource efficiency. Stephen Boyle of Resource Efficient Scotland said: ‘Using resources efficiently can save businesses money and help them to boost their reputation and meet customers’ expectations around environmental issues.

‘Since the retrofit, the Moredun store has reported a 58% reduction in energy used and, as a result, is looking at the possibility of similar changes in 40 other stores.

‘Retrofitting a store in this way is a bold example of how resource efficiency can be embraced, and I hope to see other stores inspired by their example.

‘Resource Efficient Scotland can help retailers to make the best use of their resources and replicate Scotmid’s example in their own building, old or new.’

Sponsored by Resource Efficient Scotland – a Zero Waste Scotland programme – the award was presented at the ceremony on 12th March.

Adrian Lorimer, Head of Corporate Communications at Scotmid, added: ‘This award recognises the work we carried out at Moredun and going forward into other parts of the estate.

We formed a good working relationship with Resource Efficient Scotland as we developed our energy-saving package.’

The Sustainable Retailer of the Year is awarded to retailers with an effective sustainability programme and looks at areas such as energy-efficiency, best practice in minimising packaging and food waste, provision of recycling facilities for customers, and support for local recycling and sustainability initiatives.  The category is judged by an independent panel of experts.
