A Dundee hotel employee has been awarded the title of Scotland’s Modern Apprentice of the Year.

Laura Burdin, who works at DoubleTree by Hilton Dundee, received the honour at Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards, delivered by Skills Development Scotland (SDS).

Meetings and event co-ordinator also picked up the Higher Level Apprentice of the Year category at the event in Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms.

Laura, 21 (pictured), said: ‘I was shocked when I heard my name being called out as the Apprentice of the Year. I am very grateful for the opportunities that my apprenticeship training has given me and the support I have had from my employers.

‘I feel the apprenticeship qualifications open doors for you and help you progress in your career, whatever sector that might be in,’

SDS’s Chief Executive, Damien Yeates, added: ‘Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards recognise the commitment to training show by employers and employees across the country.

‘It’s this continued commitment that will see the number of Modern Apprenticeship places increase each year from 25,000 to 30,000 by 2020. Laura is a great example of the benefits this programme  brings to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
