As Channel 4 and Michel Roux Jr prepare to launch ‘The Diner’ – a new TV programme which follows a group of people with a range of disabilities or long-term conditions on their journeys to start careers in the hospitality industry – CateringScotland.com takes a look at The Culinary Ability Awards, which aim to showcase the abilities of disabled individuals in the industry.

Awards founder, Chris Sanford, said: ‘I saw this as an opportunity for the competitors to gain personal experience and build their confidence, as well as for employers who can see how these talented individuals can support their operations.

‘ This year we are going to be hosting an event at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow, producing some delicious food and enjoying a great evening raising funds for our much-needed vision.’

And with nine out of 10 contenders ending up in full-time employment, the awards are, according to Chris, going from strength to strength.

‘We held them at Hotelympia in London last year and the winner, Michael Auld, received a scholarship with Anton Mosimann OBE (pictured).

‘Ultimately, the awards are helping shift attitudes and break down stereotypes, showing that people with disabilities can do the jobs they are asked to do.’
