Two students from Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret University (QMU) have become the first in the capital to be selected for a new scholarship programme devised by Apex Hotels and the university.

Aimed at bolstering career opportunities for hospitality and events students, it is anticipated the initiative will create a new generation of hospitality leaders.

Annie Fowden, 22, from Edinburgh’s Grassmarket area and Florencia Gago Bigñe, 21, from Portobello (pictured L&R with Apex Hotels’ Angela Vickers, centre), have each received a bursary and will begin their management apprenticeship with Apex Hotels later this month.

Designed to support the BA (Hons) Events Management students during their final year of study, the scholarship will provide each with paid work experience with the privately owned hotel firm.

Commenting on her appointment,Annie Fowden said: ‘I plan to use this experience and my undergraduate degree to develop myself professionally and personally, and to learn new skills before applying for the new Masters in Public Administration at QMU.’

Florencia Gago Bigñe, who is originally from Madrid, added: ‘This new apprenticeship scheme will be a perfect start for my career and will give me a chance to gain a deeper insight into the events industry.’

Apex Hotels founder, Norman Springford commented: ‘The hospitality industry is critical to the Scottish economy and we need to equip a young workforce with the right skills and attitude to continue improving and transforming the sector.

‘By joining forces to support and reward talented young students, we can ensure that Scotland is viewed as a leading hospitality destination both by a home audience and internationally.’
