International chocolate competition, The World Chocolate Masters, has been launched in Paris. The national pre-selections for 2017/18 begin today and over the next two years the contest will take contestants to the peak of creativity and imagination with its new ‘Futropolis’ theme.

From the national selections in 2017, only one contestant per participating country will be crowned ‘National Chocolate Master’. The winner will represent his or her country during the global final in October 2018 where an international jury will choose the new World Chocolate Masters.

Based on the growing phenomenon of megacities, Futropolis aims to evoke visions of what the world will look like by 2025, when more than half the global population is expected to be living in cities with 10m or more inhabitants.  Joost Lindemanl, Global Brand Manager for Cacao Barry, explains: ‘These megacities will challenge our ways of living, working and eating and the World Chocolate Masters competition seeks to provide answers to some of the questions raised about our future. It has always been the platform where new talents push the boundaries of chocolate. ‘If you look at some of the previous winners and finalists, they’ve become the leading international pastry and chocolate chefs and we’re really looking forward to seeing a new take on chocolate by young, millennial chefs and their ideas of flavour creation, combining it with savory elements, plants and locally grown ingredients.

The UK and Ireland pre-selections take place in October 2017.
