Food Standards Scotland Appoints First Chief Scientific Adviser

Food Standards Scotland (FSS), has appointed Professor Norval Strachan as its first Chief Scientific Adviser.
Professor Strachan, who took up the position at the end of April, currently holds a chair in physics at the University of Aberdeen specialising in food-borne illnesses such as E. coli O157, Campylobacter, Salmonella and Listeria.
Responsible for commissioning research as well as the communication of scientific and risk advice, he will act as Head of Profession for scientists within FSS. He brings nearly three decades of experience to develop a robust science and evidence strategy for the organisation, and will provide advice to the chief executive and the FSS Board.
Professor Strachan (pictured) has significant research experience in food safety, has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, and has served as a grants review panel member for FSS.
