The healthyliving award (HLA) has rewarded over 150 caterers who are making it easier for people to eat healthy when eating out, at an award ceremony held at Hampden Stadium earlier this month.

Hosted by Stephen Jardine and attended by hundreds of people involved in the Scottish food-and-drink sector – including celebrity chef, Nick Nairn – the event’s guest of honour was the Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison (pictured  far right in blue suit, homepage photo).

Ms Robison commented: ‘The healthylivingaward has been an important part of Glasgow 2014’s Food Charter, which aims to provide guidance to suppliers and caterers to ensure they meet the standards underpinning the Games’ commitments.

‘We will be encouraging them all to work towards a healthylivingaward in the run-up to the Games,’ she added.

Gerry McLaughlin, Chief Executive Officer at NHS Health Scotland, which manages the HLA, added:

‘More and more people are watching what they eat but we need to influence the options on offer, and the HLA has been a great success story for Scottish caterers and for their customers. It provides an easily accessible framework through which to improve health, in addition to delivering better business outcomes, and attaining helps meet the growing demand for healthier food. Importantly, it also garners national recognition for those who are awarded it.’

Forming an integral part of the Scottish Government’s route map to prevent obesity, the healthyliving award is part of a national drive to reduce health inequalities. Funded by the Scottish Government, it is managed by NHS Health Scotland. There are currently over 630 award holders in the country, serving over 200,000 customers daily.
