With a score of 88 percent – double the industry average – the global food giant also achieved the maximum score for the second year running in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index and the CDP Climate Performance Leadership.

The worldwide index is based on an analysis of companies’ economic, environmental and social performance, including areas such as corporate governance, climate strategy, supply chain standards and labour practices.

According to Neil Stephens, managing director of Nestlé Professional UK & Ireland, the company was measured against a number of environmental and social benchmarks which have a significant bearing on the hospitality sector: ‘Our commitment to providing cleaner energy and switching to renewable sources remains a key focus,’ he said.

‘Likewise, our commitment to the reduction of waste and packaging, and sharing our knowledge and insight with the industry to benefit our customers and meet the end consumer need.

‘Earlier this year, we announced that Nestlé UK had achieved its zero-food-and-packaging waste-to-landfill target across all its factories. This, in turn, led us at Nestlé Professional UK & Ireland to launch a free online waste management course, sharing learning with the industry and providing operators with practical advice and guidance on waste prevention and management strategies.

‘This is a key area when we consider that restaurants, pubs and hotels produce an estimated 3.4m tonnes of waste a year, of which 1.5 million goes to landfill.’
