An Argyll curry restaurant has been recognised for its efforts in making its menu choices healthier.  Kebabish Curry House, located in the heart of Oban, is one of the most recent healthyliving award (HLA) recipients.

As the only Pakistani/Indian takeaway to hold the award – and one of only two takeaway businesses in Scotland to have attained it – Kebabish has worked hard to make its dishes healthier.

Having attained both the Eat Safe Award and Scottish Curry Award in 2012 and 2013, owners Shaukat Chaudhry and Hashmat Ali decided the HLA would make a positive difference to their local community.
‘The ethos and criteria for the healthyliving award is in keeping with many of our catering practices,’ explains Mr Chaudhry (pictured right with his brother Hashmat). ‘Consequently, it was not particularly difficult for us to make the changes required to meet the HLA guidelines.’
And Hashmat, who is in charge of preparation and cooking, always ensures he cooks and serves the best quality, healthy food he can to their customers: ‘Of course, we needed to make several small changes to ensure our customers were being offered a healthier dish, including changing our cheese to a lower fat mozzarella, using only low fat yoghurt and changing our naan bread to a healthier chapatti,’ adds Shaukat.
Serving classical dishes from India and Pakistan, the west coast takeaway often slow cooks or clay bakes its meats using locally sourced ingredients: ‘We have also communicated these healthier catering practices and ingredients to our customers through the use of eye-catching posters, and we have advertised in the local press and on Facebook explaining the changes we’ve made.’
So far, the owners have been impressed with the level of interest from their customers: ‘People are interested to know the products we’re using and many seem keen to buy healthier food nowadays,’ he concludes.
‘I’m optimistic this trend will continue, and that it will benefit our business and the local community alike.’
