Global sandwich chain Subway has achieved the Scottish Government’s healthyliving award in almost double the number of anticipated stores, according to management.

Having attained the accolade in 26 of their Scottish stores – representing 17 per cent of their total presence in Scotland – the chain has far exceeded their initial target of 10 percent of stores by the end of 2014.

The pledge to reach such a large proportion of outlets formed part of the company’s eight commitments to the Supporting Healthy Choices public health policy framework. Subway customers are encouraged to select items from a wide selection of breads which have been reduced in salt, including higher fibre options. There are many lower fat fillings to choose from, as well as salads. The selection of fizzy drinks is relatively small, and there is a good range of alternative drinks from which to choose.

Gerry McLaughlin, Chief Executive of NHS Health Scotland, which runs and administers the healthyliving award, said: ‘Achieving the healthyliving award across 26 Subway stores demonstrates the firm’s commitment to providing healthier food.

‘With the award-holding stores scattered across Scotland and many more working towards accreditation, we welcome their dedication to making healthier food more accessible and affordable to all, and I would encourage others in the catering and food service sector to follow in their footsteps.’

The Healthyliving Award is the national award giving recognition to caterers and the food service sector who take a range of steps to provide healthier options. It helps consumers to know where to go to buy healthier food.  To attain an award, a business must meet a set of key criteria, which includes reducing levels of fat, salt and sugar, making fruit and vegetables more easily available alongside promotion and marketing that encourages healthier eating.
