Summit Exposes Cost of Litter Problem

A litter summit currently being held in Brussels will hear of the success of a Scottish initiative aimed at reducing litter and fly tipping around the country.
Funded by Zero Waste Scotland and delivered by Keep Scotland Beautiful, the Clean Up Scotland Campaign aims to tackle the litter problem through clean-up activities and introducing innovative solutions to prevent littering.
Iain Gulland, the Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland, said: ‘Our research has identified that litter costs Scotland at least £78m each year, including the direct costs of clearance, communications and enforcement, as well as wider costs associated with impacts on health and well being, crime, wildlife and our environment.’
“There’s a lot we can do to combat this, including the introduction of incentive schemes for communities, and imaginative communications to get people to think again about dropping litter.’
