With the first ever Wise Up On Waste app, Unilever Food Solutions is leading the way in tackling the growing problem of avoidable food waste. Unilever Food Solutions’ managing director, Tracey Rogers, outlines the initiative…

How can chefs benefit from the Wise Up On Waste app? With up to 88% of caterers using mobile apps at home and at work, we know it’s the best way to engage with them and create the biggest impact. The easy-to-use app been designed to make it simple for caterers to reduce food waste, and it also takes our online Wise Up on Waste toolkit one step further – giving them a mobile tool that allows them to track waste at their fingertips.

How does it help caterers to save money?

The free app equips caterers with the tools they need to conduct a three-day waste audit (or equivalent, according to individual requirements), to identify at what time of day the majority of food waste is generated. Once the problem area is known, the app provides caterers with access to tips, advice and resources to help their business. It then generates email summaries showing performance against the industry average, and progress graphs that can be saved and viewed at a later date.

And, as well as being cost-effective and efficient in helping the industry to reduce waste, the app also provides opportunities to save money.

We’ve already had lots of feedback from chefs and caterers about how it’s making their job easier, and that’s what we want to communicate: small changes, big difference.

So, it’s not all down to one person?

With new research from WRAP revealing that 25% of consumers admitting to leaving food on their plates when dining out – which contributes to the 400,000 tonnes of avoidable food waste that is discarded every year – it’s clear that the issue of avoidable food waste is getting worse, not better.

Following on from the success of our Wise Up On Waste toolkit, we already know that simply changing the type of garnish on customers’ plates chefs can save hundreds of pounds each month, and so we want to carry this message across the industry.

The app is for caterers. What is Unilever Food Solutions doing to make a difference?

We’ve pledged to achieve the following over the next 12 months:

  • To help chefs to accomplish at least a 5% reduction in food waste
  • To help provide healthy and nutritious meals to more than one million people

The goals are ambitious, but over time and by working together as an industry, they can be achieved.
