West Lothian College Joins Industry To Showcase Scottish Seafood

College representatives from across the country were last week introduced to a ‘new world full of endless job opportunities for young people’, at an event at West Lothian College (WLC).
The College Development Network (CDN), SQA and Seafood Scotland hosted delegates at a special food event which was organised in association with CDN and jointly funded by The Scottish Seafood Partnership.
Representatives from the seafood industry, hospitality, the college sector and invited guests were treated to cookery demonstrations and presentations from a variety of seafood specialists, including WLC chef-lecturer, Joe McFarlane (pictured).
Organised as one of three pilots projects which forms part of the Seafood in Colleges programme, the event aimed to highlight the range of careers available in the seafood industry.
CDN Subject Mentor for Food & Drink, Kate Mathieson, said: ‘It is increasingly important to highlight the global opportunities the seafood sector offers alongside those in the wider food and drink manufacturing industry.
‘It is crucial for the students, the industry and for Scotland’s economic wellbeing.’
Jess Sparks, Technical Manager for Seafood Scotland and key spokesman of the event, added: ‘This industry has fantastic opportunities for young students. Our challenge is to change the general public perception of the seafood sector and to showcase it as a prosperous and expanding area.’
